Discovering Grau Roig-Pessons
What will we find in this excursion?
This is the last outing of the AWF 2024. We will start and finish at the Grau Roig parking and depending on the level, we will discover areas such as Lake Rodó and Lake Forcat, Lake Pessons, Cubil Petit with magnificent views, or the triple border, the point that joins the three borders between Andorra, Spain and France.

Costa Rodona (Pas de la Casa) building- Andorra’s Portella Blanca -Engaït peak-Colells Cirque-Cubil car park in Grau Roig
We will start from the access car park to the ski slopes of Pas de la Casa (Costa Rodona restaurant). We cross the slopes to the Abelletes lake, source of the Ariège river and frontier with France. The border passes through the middle of the lake. From here we go uphill, crossing a chaos of granite blocks, to the false col dels Isards, a little further up, the real col dels Isards. We go down a little and head towards a beautiful lake, the Passaderes, which gives access to the Campcardós valley. You will enjoy spectacular views of the 2.900-metre peaks. From the lake we will reach the first important landmark, the triple border that delimits the regions of Ariège, Cerdanya and Andorra, at Portella Blanca. Here we will take the GR7 which we will not leave until Grau Roig. Before arriving, we will have a good climb to the peak of Engaït, which with its 2.773 metres will be the highlight of the day.
Baix de Cubil peak
The Baix de Cubil peak is the lowest of the five that form the Pessons cirque, although it offers stunning views. From the Cubil car park we start to climb the "Camí dels Pessons" ski slope until we find the GRP. We will follow it until it leaves the wide piste, here we will take a south-westerly direction until we reach the Cubil chairlift return. We must keep the same direction and climb first up an easy slope and then over more alpine terrain until we reach a small landing. A rocky area and a Gazex station (an avalanche device in winter) separate us from the summit, also known as Cubil Petit. This summit offers exceptional views. We will descend along the same route... or perhaps we will shorten the route a little.
Cubil car park-Estany (lake) Primer de Pessons-La Solana lakes-Meligar lake-Rodó lake-Forcat lake-Estany Primer de Pessons-Cubil car park
Today's excursion is one of the most classic ones in the Andorran Mountains. The impressive glacial cirque of Pessons and the large number of lakes inside it make a visit here a must. Initially, we will have to cross the 200 positive metres that separate the Cubil car park and the first lake of Pessons. We will continue ascending through the lakes of La Solana to reach, already descending, the lake of Meligar. Continue the descent along the GR11, passing the Rodó and Forcat lakes, to reach the first lake of Pessons again. From here, a quick descent along the ski slope will finally take us to the base of the Grau Roig ski resort.
