What will we find in this excursion?
Today we will discover the Madriu Valley, one of the most interesting valleys in the country. In 2004, Madriu Valley Perafita Claror enters the UNESCO World Heritage list in the cultural landscape category. The cooperation created by generations of human labour in stockbreeding, agriculture, ironworks and hydroelectric activities, together with the rich natural existing heritage, helped it become a part of the unique 88 UNESCO similar areas in the world. It represents approximately 9% out of the Andorran territory, spreading across 4 parishes out of 7.
The three levels will discover and go all over the valley and its areas of influence.
The valley, of clearly glacier origin, gathers many of the stages we can find at the Pyrenees, starting by the mountain stage at 1000m, ending up in the alpine stages at the Portella summit, 2905 m, and also mountain stages like the Blau or the Nou at Perafita.
La Plana Bridge - Entremesaigües - Perafita - La Maiana Hill- Madriu - Coll Jovell - Engolasters Lake
This is, without a doubt, the most demanding outing in the AWF. Despite not climbing any summit, we will need to be in good shape to finish the journey. Nevertheless, the landscapes will help us quickly forget the effort, and will leave an unforgettable memory in your retinas and in your digital cameras. We will depart from the Plana bridge, quite close to the capital. The terrain will be stone paved for a while. We will go along the GR-7 and the GR-11 path most of the journey, as well as the GRP. We will enjoy the Perafita mountain refuge, the views from the Maiana hill and the descent to Estall Serrer, where we will be able to see vestiges of the old forges. When arriving to Madriu main valley, and starting the way back, we will go by Fontverd mountain refuge, go up to coll Jovell and, going down to Engolasters lake, we will end our excursion.
La Plana Bridge - Fontverd mountain refuge - Solà Way - Coll Jovell - Engolasters Lake
This is one of the most classical hiking routes in Andorra. It will allow us go all over Madriu Valley along its stone paved ways, in order to enjoy the pasture meadows, next to the Fontverd mountain refuge, where we will stop for a picnic. The way back will go along the Solà way, where we will be surprised by generations of Works in order to stop and prepare cattle crossing through the stone piles, to coll Jovell. From coll Jovell we will go down to Engolasters lake, going by the “balcony path” over Andorra la Vella and Escaldes, and its panoramic viewpoint on a rock.
Engolasters Lake - Coll Jovell - La Closa Fountain - Engolasters Lake
We will start this outing backwards from A and B. We will start and end in Engolasters lake. First we will climb GR-11 up to coll Jovell, where we will enjoy the panoramic overview over the city and, in coll Jovell, we will also enjoy a viewpoint over Madriu valley, with spectacular views over its forests. From coll Jovell we will go down, following a shadowy way that goes along a magnificent firs and pine trees forest, full of moss and silence, in order to arrive to the Closa fountain, quite close to Sant Miquel d’Engolasters. At this point, we will cross the road to go by some mountain houses (bordes), and follow the way that will take us back to Engolasters lake. Once we get there, we will surround it and we will end up at the exit.
